I just read the most interesting article on thefashionspot.com about the “making” of Lady Gaga. Always a controversial figure, the article credits early pop stars/fashionistas/free spirits Madonna and Grace Jones as paving the way for Lady Gaga’s emergence. Early on these women learned that to rule the pop world and the fashion world simultaneously one just has to follow three easy steps:
- Get a “look.”
- Find the right fashion people to help create that look.
- Hire the right fashion photographers to shoot that look.
Regardless of anyone’s personal opinion on Lady Gaga, she has, interestingly enough, hit all three points fabulously. She hired Hedi Slimane who has designed for YSL (!) and established Dior Homme which became the go-to look for cool men’s fashion and pioneered the way to what we now know as the “hipster” look.
Next up is fashion stylist Nicola Formichetti. Honestly I had never heard of him, but he shoots runway shows, is a reoccurring guest for magazines such I-D, and is the creative director of Dazed and Confused. Looking at his pictures you can easily see why Lady Gaga chose him. If you look closely at many of his photo credits you will notice that none other than Hedi Slimane has done the styling. Paired together they have created Lady Gaga.
While a lot of her looks can only be called costumes, her use of high fashion is so incredibly creative. My favorite look of hers was the infamous Alexander McQueen shoes that are virtually un-walkable, which she put in a walking and dancing laden music video.
Whether her look was created by what is now known as the “Haus of Gaga” (the group of people surrounding Gaga who make up her look) or her interests converged with theirs, it definitely makes for a head-turning, jaw-dropping, show-stopping combination.
What do you think of Lady Gaga’s fashion choices and look?
Which photographer, stylist, and designer would you have around you to create your own Haus?
